FIDE has confirmed Geneva as host city for the 2026 World Championship Match, running from 25 November to 15 December. Reigning champion Gukesh D defends the title against challenger Javokhir Sindarov, and both of them will be 20 years old when it starts, officially the youngest World Championship match in the sport's history. Most people get to make their first real mistake in private. These two get to blunder it in front of a few million people and a live broadcast.
Gukesh became the youngest ever World Champion in the first place, beating Ding Liren in Singapore in December 2024 at 18. Sindarov earned his shot by winning the 2026 Candidates in Cyprus with a round to spare, on the back of already winning the 2025 World Cup. Neither of them is exactly unproven, this is two of the sport's actual best players, not a youth-versus-experience story dressed up for headlines.
Geneva won out over bids from India, the United States and Cyprus, FIDE going with neutral ground rather than either player's home federation. It's also a homecoming of sorts for Swiss chess, the country's Swiss Chess Federation president called it the first event of this scale back in the country since Brissago in 2004, 22 years ago.
Two 20-year-olds, three weeks, Geneva. At that age three weeks abroad meant a lads' holiday, four A&E trips, and someone always crying on the balcony by day two. This lot will spend it playing 14 classical games, first to 7½ points wins outright, tiebreaks only if it's still level after all 14. Six hours of pure focus on one board, per game. I've sat six hours in a pub and the only thing I was calculating was whether I could still get a kebab before it closed.
Match regulations, schedule, and ticket details are still to come. Full announcement on FIDE.com.
